Holiday Activities
During the First Term Holidays on the 26th and 28th of March, the Eco School Committee came back to school for some holiday activities. We had hands-on experiences on how to make mud balls, self watering plants and some crafts using recycled items. We also went around the school to survey each class’s miniature garden and notice boards. We checked on the recycle bins around the school. On these two days, we managed to brain storm for future eco-projects and strengthen our bond in the committee.
Activity 1: Making Mud balls
One of the projects were to make mud balls with the purpose of using it as a cleaning agent for the monsoon drain behind our school. Mud balls are effective cleaning agents because it sinks to the bottom of the drain and the active microorganisms are not washed away. These mud balls generally contains clay soil, brown sugar and rice bran. The brown sugar serves as a food source for the active microorganisms.
Activity 2: Making self Watering Plants
The other activity was to make a self watering plant, with reference to its name, this plant can live sustainably for two weeks without being watered. As long as it is placed in a bright room, with sunlight, it can survive by itself. Students learnt how to make this unique designed plant by creating an effective pot for it to grow in. The pot is made out of a 1 litre plastic bottle and a straw, with a few snips here and there, the self watering devise is completed.
