Awareness Promotions
In the month of February, the Eco School Committee set out to spread awareness about the environment in relation to a few themes chosen. Those themes are Waste & Litter, Transportation, School ground and Water & Biodiversity. Committee members gave speeches and performed sketches during morning assemblies relating to the themes.

In order to cut down on the amount of waste produced, our school has been applying the 3Rs concept (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle). Not surprisingly, after observation, the canteen was found to be the source of the most waste as students leave their uneaten food on their plates. Besides that, many students do not throw their rubbish into the right dustbins, or worse still, leave it on the floor. Efforts must be taken to curb this repulsive behavior. Of course, students should carry this attitude with them wherever they go. When we leave a place, the only thing we should leave is our footprints.

Water is perhaps the single most important resource that humanity requires. However, people don’t seem to realize just how critical a role water plays in their lives. The average household’s water leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year. Besides the wastage of water, another issue is the dangers of water pollution. Several substances besides garbage are present in polluted water such as insecticides, heavy metals like zinc, cadmium, lead and detergents. Polluted and contaminated water is the cause of many diseases such as malaria and cholera. Rivers too are the only water source for many animals. Without fresh and clean water, animals will not be able to survive. Clean water is essential to maintain our planet’s biodiversity.

In this modern world we live in, transportation plays an essential role in our lives. Therefore, it is a no-brainer to work towards more environmentally friendly transportation as it brings improved health, a cleaner environment, increased resource efficiency, and sustainable economic growth. Air pollution is almost invisible except for places such as Beijing or Mexico City where the smog is always present. However, air pollution is a silent killer as it is still a major cause of illness and death. To this date, traffic remains the largest cause of air pollution. Each and every one of us has to play our part in fighting the growth of air pollution. What we do may seem small, but put enough small parts together and it creates a gargantuan whole.
