Erik is a musical genius who must hide his disfigured face behind a mask and he lives in the catacombs beneath New York’s Broadhurst Theatre. He is known only as the Phantom of the Opera or the Opera Ghost.
His sole companion is his young singing protege, a soprano named Christine Sanchez who is drawn to him. She is mystified by, but at the same time terrified of,the Angel of Music whose enchanting songs fill her with rapture. His voice whispers in her ear during the day.
Everyone at her opera house is used to the Phantom’s deadly when his demands are not met but Lulu McQueen, the opera’s leading diva, throws a tantrum and leaves in a huff as she is tired of the strange happenings at the theatre.
With no understudy, the new directors turn to Christine who is no more than a chorus girl. The show casts her into immediate fame. However, when Christine, whom the Phantom has fallen in love with, accepts a marriage proposal from her childhood sweetheart Senator Raoul, the Phantom’s heart is broken.
Erik’s despair quickly turns to furious jealously and rage. He is willing to do anything to win her, even if it means raising the stakes and forcing Christine to choose between her love for Raoul and her strange attraction to Erik the Phantom.
